Sargent calls for Capitol Free Speech that Reflects Wisconsin Values
Madison – Assembly candidate Melissa Sargent calls on Walker administration to build economy, not bash peaceful singers.
“Governor Walker is more interested in stopping the peaceful, lunch time capitol choir than creating jobs,” said Sargent. “Walker is profoundly confused about the priorities that Wisconsin values reflect. He is willing to play politics with our economy, waiting months to take up vital job creating measures, while at the same time prioritizing arresting and ticketing peaceful demonstrators in the most public of spaces in the most public of buildings.”
During the political demonstrations of the last two years, Melissa has been a steadfast supporter of all who wished to voice their political opinion and she remains committed to safeguarding the Wisconsin value of open dialogue and the constitutional right of free speech. She was even ticketed as a result of her children peacefully holding signs in the capitol. As a county Board supervisor, Melissa led the charge to pass a resolution that called on Walker’s administration to allow peaceful demonstrations.
Sargent, added “Walker’s trampling of constitutional rights should chill Wisconsinites of all political stripes, even his most ardent supporters must wonder why he is going so wrong.”
Melissa is serving her second term on the Dane County Board, where she serves as the chair of the Health and Human Needs committee. Melissa grew up in Madison. She is a wife and mother of four sons, and a small business owner who is a graduate of East High and UW-Madison.
The new 48th Assembly District includes Madison’s Northside, Maple Bluff and portions of Madison’s east side.
